Nightlife in Marrakesh

Djemaa El Fna at night

As the sun sets, the party is only just beginning in Marrakesh. The streets come alive with beats from the clubs and smells from the late night food. People from around the world travel to Morocco and flock to Marrakesh for a myriad of reasons; some go to experience the culture, some crave the shopping and the goods eats, and others prefer the historical attractions. Whichever your preference, one thing is sure: All agree that Marrakesh is the party capital of North Africa. Marrakesh’s nightlife attracts travelers near and far for one reason: The variety and quality of the nightlife guarantees something for everyone.

Marrakesh is a partier’s playground. The city offers multiple venues to “shake your groove thing” on the dance floor. Most of the large dance clubs have DJs spinning eclectic mashups. Even the most sedentary individual can’t resist dancing to the beat in the techno discoteques. The widespread lure of the city guarantees a diverse clientele. At one of the most popular disco joints, Theatro, you’ll find yourself partying with a myriad of nationalities under a disco ball. The establishment doubles as a show; as is the case with most clubs in Marrakesh, performers and dancers populate the stage in extravagant costumes. Those that prefer a flashier scene go to Le Comptoir Darna. This club features electric music mixed with Arab dance, giving it a North African authentic feel.

Most partiers, however, are drawn to the renowned Pacha Marrakech. This jumbo-establishment is a combination restaurant, bar, and club, offering variety to the antsy client seeking constant changes in scenery. Pacha has a reputation for hosting famous DJs while catering to gigantic crowds. Amidst the flashing lights and pounding beats, look out for performers in costumes scattered throughout the dance floor. This mix-up only adds to the revelry. Most of the large clubs also offer secluded lounges for the more relaxed clients. Be advised: Most large clubs, like in Europe, require you to pay an (often) reasonable cover.

Is techno not your scene? Enjoy the live music scene throughout a variety of bars and clubs in Marrakesh. Perhaps the most popular live music location is African Chic. The authentic bar offers a casual scene with different live music each night. I recommend checking the schedule beforehand to verify your interest in the genre. As is the case with the club scene, live music locations may also require you to pay a cover. As such, be prepared with cash.

After a long night of toe tapping, many find themselves craving a late night snack. My recommendation is to visit it the main square, Djemaa El Fna to sample freshly cooked late-night cuisine. Others opt for a “snack” restaurant, which are located throughout Morocco and offer late night goods such as pizza and fries “a la Marocain.”

Marrakesh is steeped in cultural tourism. Nonetheless, many prefer Marrakesh for its outstanding partying scene, which is often compared to that of Ibiza in Spain. Unlike Ibiza, however, Marrakesh offers a uniquely Moroccan twist—either through the mashup music, the food, or the Moroccan costumes.
